April Vacation Classes 2023

April Vacation classes will run from Tuesday, April 18 to Friday, April 21 at Angier Elementary School. Sign up for a morning class, an afternoon class or both! If you sign up for both, be sure to also register for lunch. Registering for lunch lets us know that your child will stay with us the whole day but we do not provide lunch. Please make sure you pack lunch for your child. 

Morning Classes (9am-12pm)

Circuitry 101 (grades K-2)
Let’s get creative with electricity! In this hands-on electronics class, you’ll gain experience creating your own electronics. Design custom light-up greeting cards, electric games, mazes, and even musical instruments. Each class day consists of a circuitry lesson and a hands-on electronics project, using components like lights, buzzers, switches, motors, and sensors. Your instructor will make sure participants create many projects that you can be proud of, and each class day includes a take-home project.

Soccer with Coach Fabio (grades K-2)
Get ready for an action-packed week of soccer! Players will learn the basics of soccer through a series of fun games in a non-competitive setting and get individualized instruction in high-energy scrimmages. We'll work on shooting, passing, dribbling, and trapping. Players will be grouped by age and ability. Note: Wear shin guards and bring a soccer ball and water bottle.

Fashion Art Project (grades K-4)
Fashion lovers unite! Draw and paint fashion illustrations of different outfits. Then, walk the runway wearing your own original trash bag dresses. Design duct tape wallets with patterned tape. Learn to recycle matchboxes to make lockets with a picture inside. Construct a colorful fabric purse, a wearable sun hat, and a fleece beanie. Use plastic and wood beads for bracelets and necklaces. All projects are wearable.

SuperSports (grades K-4)
Have fun while learning a variety of sports and the skills required to play these sports. Cooperation and teamwork are the main focus, rather than competition. Before introducing new sports, their rules, and their strategies, kids will learn proper warm-ups, lead-up games, and stretching. We'll play soccer, basketball, kickball, flag football plus some less traditional games such as PinGuard, Softee-Hockey, Handball, and more.  We keep everyone moving from one thing to the next, covering all the bases!

Basketball Jr, Learn & Play! (grades K-5)
Learn the basics of basketball from our fun-loving and experienced coach! You’ll work on ball-handling, dribbling, defending, passing, and shooting. Enjoy games, contests, and more. No sports experience is necessary, just a desire to learn, move and have fun! Wear athletic clothing and sneakers.

Lego® Challenges (grades 2-5)
Each day you will be challenged to create a sensational Lego® scene. Each challenge is a mystery that your teacher will reveal – A helicopter rescue scene? A space shuttle launch site? Lego® Godzilla attacking a city? Be ready for anything! Then it’s off to the races as you and a partner have limited time to create your scene and present it to the class. Lego® and public speaking, now that’s a match!

Glass Art: Fusing, Jewelry & Mosaic (grades 2-5)
Dazzle family and friends with your masterful glass artwork. Make a trivet, name plate, or big decorated mirror with glass mosaic, decorative tiles, and a night light with fusing. Place glass beads and dichroic pieces in a deep pendant to create two necklaces. Master these techniques and learn to work safely with glass as you explore the creativity this medium allows.

Technology & Design Sampler (grades 2-8)
Dive into video game design, coding, 3D art, and more! Explore a wide variety of STEM technology in a rotating schedule with technologies like Tinkercad, Flowlab, Minecraft, Roblox, and several others! Students will be encouraged to try several of these options over the first few days and then dig deeper into areas that excite them. Try new things, and discover new technology!

Realistic Drawing (grades 5-8)

Realistic drawing can seem daunting at first but there are many centuries old techniques to easily learn how and open the door to being able to render anything as we naturally see it. We will start with life drawing in pencil, then move on to perspective and how lighting can create an impressive landscape drawing. We will work from both real life and photographs learning the basics techniques that many artists use to make realistic landscape drawings. Finally we'll move onto drawing animals and human beings realistically.

Afternoon Classes (12:30pm-3:30pm)

Harry Potter Whimsical Cupcake Toppers (grades K-4)
Create Harry Potter whimsical cupcake toppers using edible materials to adorn any cake. A world renowned sugar artist will teach you tips and techniques to create characters such as Harry, Hermoine, and Dumbledore — each one almost too cute to eat!.

Gym Games: Time to Have a Blast! (grades K-5)
Get ready to have a blast playing your favorite gym games. Together we’ll learn new games and play the tried-and-true ones like capture the flag, floor hockey, and don’t throw your trash in my backyard. Get ready for a day filled with old favorites and new-age fun! No sports experience is necessary, just a desire to move and get creative. Note: Wear athletic clothing and sneakers.

Nick's Club Advanced Chess (grades 2-8)
Serious chess players: why take a week off from your favorite game? Review chess principles, looking at positions from real games played by grandmasters, and focus on strategy and positional tactics. Each day will include a combination of instruction and games; on the last day we'll have an in-class tournament. Keep your mind sharp this break and join us to play the ultimate game of strategy. This class is for students with prior chess experience. Terms like "en passant", "castling", "promotion", "opening", and "endgame" should be reasonably familiar to students.

Advanced 3D Printing, Coding & Design (grades 3-5)
If you’ve got the general concepts of 3D printing down, join us to learn more! Take a deeper dive into exploring the world of computer-aided design with BlocksCAD! Investigate advanced coding techniques, such as variables, modules, and logic statements. Design unique projects such as stencils, game pieces, houses, and even green energy technologies! The course is designed for students with prior coding / BlocksCAD experience. Each student will receive one complimentary 3D print of their choosing.

Hands-on Electronics (grades 3-6)
Tinker with electronics while learning the basics of computer programming. Begin by experimenting with the fundamentals of electronics and circuitry, and step up to projects where you will design your own interactive and programmable devices. Use the latest tools including Arduino and Raspberry Pi to experiment with LEDs, resistors, motors, and programming.

Drawing Imaginary Creatures: Dragons, Manticore, Cryptids and More (grades 3-5)
Learn to draw dragons, mythological creatures, cryptids, and creatures from your imagination. We'll look at how people centuries ago combined animals like snakes and horses together to create new ones. We'll look at making different styles of dragons from simple to cute to imposing to scary. Then we'll move on to drawing mythic animals such as the Manticore and the Huma bird to tell epic and exciting stories.

Full-Day Classes (9:00am-3:30pm)

Chinese Language & Culture (grades K-5)
Through various activities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, you’ll learn Chinese language and culture. Emphasis is placed on improving self-confidence and sense of accomplishment. Combined with movements and static activities, learning is taking place through entertainment and game activities. Develop basic skills in listening, speaking, character recognition and writing simple sentences through songs, rhythms, games, poetry, tongue twisters, stories and cartoons. Your instructor will design learning materials based on each students' levels and provide students with a systematic learning journey.

Intermediate Chess Club with Santiago (grades K-6)
Move beyond beginner chess as you review chess basic principles and get introduced to chess tactics, pawn pins, discovery attacks, skewers, forks, X-rays, windmills, and more! We'll practice a lot and review each game. We'll also learn the old non-algebraic system of chess notations. You’ll be introduced to strategies, study openings, explore aspects of the middle game and endgame pattern recognition.
